Wilma Zylstra, age 93, of rural Chatfield passed away peacefully on Friday, January 20, 2017 at the Chosen Valley Care Center where she had resided for 5 months.
Wilma Anne Zylstra was born at her family home in Haverhill Township, Olmsted County, MN to Lysle and Verna Clement on February 15, 1923 and attended country school there. When Wilma was 12 years old, the family moved to Stewartville, where she graduated from Stewartville High School in 1941. The following year, Wilma moved to Washington D.C. and worked at the Pentagon in the Civil Service for four years, keeping track of personnel, equipment, and supplies for the wartime efforts. In 1947 she moved back to Rochester, and began working at Mayo Clinic in the Registration Department.
Wilma married Meindert Zylstra on March 14th, 1953 at Pleasant Grove Church of Christ. Soon after, she left her job at Mayo to raise her family and help her husband with his farming endeavors. In October 1964 the family purchased and moved to their farm in rural Chatfield where they lived for the next 52 years. Wilma started back at Mayo Clinic at this time, making appointments for international patients at the Advanced Appointment Desk until her retirement in 1988. Upon retiring, Wilma volunteered as the manager of Chatfield Brass Band Music Lending Library for several years. She also volunteered time at the Wykoff Area Historical Society.
Wilma was an active member of Pleasant Grove Church of Christ for most of her life, and enjoyed singing the alto part of the hymns. She was an avid puzzler and also enjoyed family camping vacations, fishing trips, scrapbooking, sewing, crocheting, tatting, and collecting stamps. Many hours were spent attending concerts and parades for the Chatfield Brass Band and, as her children were growing up, the Chatfield school bands and choirs.
Wilma is survived by her husband of 64 years, Meindert Zylstra of Chatfield; three children, Phyllis (Paul) Comstock of Stillwater, MN; Ronnie (Barbara) Zylstra of Stewartville and Sylvia (Brent) Klomps of Chatfield; grandchildren, Gary Zylstra, Jennifer (Joshua) Datta, Victoria Klomps, Stephanie Zylstra, Joseph Klomps, Carolyn (Seth) Lilly.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; son, Gene; daughter, Elaine; sisters Clarice Anders, Merle Clement, Nadine Cook; brother Keith Clement.
