New Kingsland School Board members Troy Asher and Gwen Howard attend the board's organizational meeting held Jan. 3.
Kingsland's school board of directors held its 2013 organizational meeting Jan. 2, welcoming Gwen Howard and Troy Asher to the board, which consists of Doug Plaehn, Deb Larson, Kristin Beck and Steve Tart, in addition to the new members.

Plaehn was nominated to remain as the board's chairman; Beck, as vice chair; Larson was chosen as clerk; and Tart was chosen to be treasurer.

Committee assignments were made next, with Tart and Asher on the finance and facility committee, which now meets at 5:30 p.m. the first Monday of each month instead of at 5 p.m. Howard and Larson were named to the curriculum and personnel committee, meeting the second Monday of each month at 5 p.m. Plaehn and Beck will be on the policy and public relations committee, meeting the fourth Monday of each month at 5 p.m. Community education coordinator Becky Bicknese will also serve on the public relations committee.

Subcommittee assignments placed Larson as legislative liaison and on the meet and confer committee; Beck as Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL), systems accountability and Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) representative; Asher on the standards and discipline committee; Howard on special needs and cable access; Tart on the transportation, vocational and agricultural committees; Plaehn on the labor committee; and Tom Speltz as activity director.

District negotiations will be handled by Plaehn, Tart and Beck, with Plaehn and Beck navigating superintendent and district-wide negotiations, and Tart and Plaehn dealing with principal and administration and classified negotiations.
