The Spring Grove choirs will perform their first concert of the school year at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.
Spring Grove High School Honor Choir students that attended the St. Olaf Choral Festival are Chase Grinde, Claire Bratland, Hannah Borreson and Devon Nerstad. They will be recognized during the upcoming choir concert.
The concert will open with the Junior Choir (46 members) singing the traditional “Canadian Huron Carol ’Twas in the Moon of Wintertime” by J. Alban Hinton.
Seventh- and eighth-grade students will show their work of phrasing and dynamics on the canon song “The King of Love” arranged by Julie Knowles.
Students will sing in three independent parts in the song “What Child Is This” arranged by Jack North, and the Junior Choir will finish with a 1950’s swing version of “A Holly Jolly Christmas” by Johnny Marks. Jean Ellingson, Amelia Solum and Rhiannon Skauge will accompany the choir on piano as well as Devon Nerstad with bells.
The Senior Choir (85 members) will open its set with the Navy hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” by William Whiting and John B. Dykes.
The anthem for mixed chorus, “How Lovely Are the Messengers” by Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) will follow. This classical piece of music has a high level of difficulty and complex vocal lines. Students must stretch their vocal range to sing this masterpiece.
The Mendelssohn piece will be followed by a winter favorite, “Sleigh Ride” as arranged by Mark Brymer. Accompanying the Senior Choir will be Jean Ellingson on piano and Devon Nerstad on bells.
Other highlights of the concert will include the Chamber Choir (32 members) singing Irving Berlin’s “White Christmas” and the Women’s Choir (16 members) singing “Winter Dream” by James Desjardins and “Winter Song” by folk singer-songwriters Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.
The Men’s Choir (16 members) will honor the 50th anniversary of the movie “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” with the tune “You’re A Mean One, Mr. Grinch” by Dr. Seuss and Albert Hague.
A solo will be performed by tenor Zachary Rains during the Stephen Foster’s “Beautiful Dreamer.”
The Chamber Choir is accompanied by Jean Ellingson on piano, Elena Myrah with her flute, Hailey Borreson with her cello, and Sam Flatin on bass guitar.
The concert will conclude with a massed Junior/Senior Choir singing a student favorite, Peter J. Wilhousky’s “Carol of the Bells.”
Acknowledged at the concert will be Honor Choir students who attended the St. Olaf Choral Festival on Nov. 6 – Chase Grinde, Claire Bratland, Hannah Borreson and Devon Nerstad.
