SGH/Jordan Gerard The members of the Spring Grove fifth and sixth-grade classes invite the public to their upcoming musical ‘The Wizard of Oz’ that will be presented on Thursday, Jan. 26, beginning at 7 p.m. The play is being directed by Bethany Engen.

Spring Grove fifth and sixth graders will travel to the Land of Oz in their annual musical production on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 7 p.m. in the Spring Grove School gymnasium.

There will be a dress rehearsal performance on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 9:15 a.m. in the school gymnasium. Admission is free for both performances.

The 45-minute play features fifth graders in the chorus and sixth graders in familiar and favorite roles such as Dorothy, Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion.

This is the first year the two grades have been combined in the production.

Choir/music teacher Bethany Engen said she decided to combine the grades in the play because their other musical classes are combined, such as fifth- and sixth-grade band.

They also learn to sing in two parts when they get to fifth- and sixth-grade choir, which means more voices and stronger parts.

“I think they [fifth graders] like seeing the ins and outs of it,” Engen said.

The students have been rehearsing since the first week of November. Sixth graders had to audition for a singing, dancing or speaking part.

Engen said the students are excited for the musical, and they are well prepared.

“They memorized their lines so fast, and they ask questions. They take it very seriously,” she pointed out.
