Over the past several years, residents in Winona County schooled themselves about the negative environmental, social and economic realities of the boom in frac sand mining and came together to form a grass roots movement to protect their land and communities. They attended meetings, called their elected representatives, put signs in their yards and wrote letters to the editor. And democracy worked: Winona County passed a ban on frac sand mining, the first in the country.

Thanks to all of those who worked so hard and long to make this happen. And thanks, of course, to the Winona County Commissioners Marie Kovecsi, Greg Olson, and Jim Pomeroy for passing the ban.

Mike Meeker,
